Atlast! This has been one of the least talked about yet the most common problem people have.

NO ITS NOT AN ABNORMALITY! It is a disorder that you develop but, can get rid of just the way I did.

Insomnia has become a part of those taboo topics that people find difficulty in talking about that’s why we don’t get to know how so many of us fight insomnia on daily basis and lose the battle every night.

I grew up always sleeping on time getting my 8-9 hours of sleep since the time I was a child. I loved my sleep more than anything I am sure everyone out there agrees. We all love to stay in that cozy bed wrapped up in our blankets and just enjoying how you don’t need to get out of the bed and you can just relax.

ITS JUST AMAZING (HAHA that’s the way I express sleeping)

So what is this Disorder then? Which is developed over a period of time and you are certainly not born with it? (I AM NOT A MEDICAL DOCTOR THIS IS JUST WHAT I WENT THROUGH)

When I put it into words “ There is something in the brain like some substance that is not being produced the way it should be something like a glitch in the brain that leaves us up all night, or gives us sleep in intervals, something that is not always attached to our habits and attitudes”.

I was never an insomniac and when I used to hear adults talk about it I would feel genuine pity towards them. It is not something as simple as it sounds. It messes up your head. You wake up tired and exhausted (I mean, whats worse than that).

Sleeping is the best therapy (LITERALLY)

So what are the causes of it. Insomnia is triggered due to stress, depression, emotional and psychological causes that could also be due to anger, any kind of trauma, worry, grief and in my case also due to my migraine. Whenever I would have migraine for days I would end up staying up all night. It got worse after I suddenly changed my routine from sleeping at 10pm to sleeping at 2am due to my unhealthy habit of wasting time on my mobile.

So to add, migraines and sudden change of routine could also be the reason why you stay up all night.

My brain just wont stop like I would keep thinking about unimportant stuff. Make up situations and wake up with more stress in the morning (LITERALLY, AN EMPTY BRAIN IS A DEVIL’S WORKSHOP). I am sure we all do this.

Staring at the roof and thinking about completely random stuff. In my case initially it wasn’t that boring since my roof has those shining green stars which I got sick and tired of counting (LOL). I would imagine stuff that would never happen and get stressed over how my life is becoming pointless and meaningless and even in the mornings I would wake up with the same arid thoughts. I would get into bed at 11pm and stay awake until 3am then somehow manage to sleep out of exhaustion and wake up at 5am again and this kept on becoming worse until I had to bring about a change in my routine.

1) So I will Discuss how I developed insomnia

2) How did I react and move towards my journey to get rid of it?

3) Did I take any medication (Homeopathic/ Allopathic)?

4) How do I take control of my day when I have not slept properly?

5) My Routine versus then and now

I had stopped exercising due to my overblown routine. Although I would be tired but, still would not be able to sleep. That’s when I had to go back to my old routine of investing time in exercising and finding time for my hobbies as well. The reason why I keep repeating how important is it to find time for yourself is because you feel yourself when you do something that you enjoy.

1) Exercise and Meditating

2) Enjoying your hobbies and making time for them even if its only over the weekend

So since I accepted it, I put myself first and my lazy habits aside. I would spend a little time in painting, writing ,baking or cooking something with my family. Next I would get in bed on time. I would block my mind from thinking anything at all. THE THINKING AND PLANNING IS TO BE DONE IN DAYLIGHT NOT AT NIGHT.

So instead of going for any medication (Since people suggested homeopathic medicines) I took the natural way out my making small changes in my routine. Just an alarm for all; I have still not completely gotten rid of it. But, since the time I exercise and meditate a couple of hours before going to bed I have started sleeping more than I usually would.

I avoid taking caffeine atleast two hours before my bed time. I wear comfy nightsuits and don’t tie my hair while going to bed. I am in my most comfy situation when I get into bed and before sleeping I encourage myself on all the accomplishments I have made.

It made sound vague but, trust me I know of people who have gone through long courses of medication and that has done zero for them. Be it going to therapy centers or whatever. Although to mention, getting full body massage is one of the most underrated therapy yet it’s the BEST!

All these changes that I brought in my routine weren’t brought in a day. Prolly, over a month’s time or more.

So give yourself time.

And stop telling yourself that you are sick

What a beautiful morning not only because its my 24th Birthday Morning but, since the time I have started blogging I am trying to become more thankful for whatever I have and for things that I don’t have (especially if I thought they were good for me but, they weren’t).

As soon as you enter your twenties, everything completely changes. From your mindset to your goals, from how everyone once saw you as a child but, now you have suddenly become an adult. Since all of us go through this uncertain age. We can all say this from experience that this age makes you go through WAY TOO MANY experiences.

I mean when I shared this topic with my parents and a few other acquaintances they all got so charged up and gave me a few advices for me to write them down and share it with you all.

I could see a lot of similarities between the advices everyone gave since there are certain aspects of life that we need to hold onto continuously to be able to succeed. I also want you to ask yourself WHAT IS SUCCESS FOR YOU? Is success related to financial freedom, happiness, having love, power or what exactly is it? That is my 24th Goal (MY EVERYDAY REMINDER).

One more important thing I notice in people around me is the attitude they have towards writing their goals in a diary. I do it, and its not weird AT ALL it shows how committed you are towards your goals. How seriously do you take your goals.

If you can do well without it that’s good too but, if you keep a record of it you can keep going back to it and seeing how many of those goals have been accomplished.

1) Start with Writing your goals down (In a diary)

It could be a weekly diary or if you prefer a monthly one as well. DON’T FORGET TO KEEP GOING BACK TO REMIND YOURSELF.

2) Change your mindset towards being responsible (Most Important)

Thinking of your new job or the final year of your degree, don’t think of it as a burden rather it is a milestone that takes you closer to your goals.

3) Get Organized (I say almost in every blog)

Set your routine in a way that you don’t have to panic everyday about what needs to be done next.

4) Don’t Ever Compare yourself with others

Please DON’T do this. Stop envying over what others have and you don’t. Don’t think about how your friends jobs and you don’t. You need to create your own path. YOU ARE UNIQUE!

5) Share your thoughts with close ones (It is always helpful for you and for others as well)

Not a necessity but, sharing with a close friend or family member is always a good idea. It gives you that encouragement and boost that you need and I am sure they also get charged up to do something unusual.

6) Understand that its complete ok to not be like others and have different preferences/perceptions

YOU ARE YOU, you are suppose to have a different mindset that sets you apart from others. Its not important for you to nod your head in agreement with others all the time. If you don’t want to follow a certain career path like others that move and change it. YOU ARE NOT A TREE SO MOVE AND DO WHAT YOU FEEL IS RIGHT.

7) Don’t wait for appreciation and approval from others

Omg! Please understand this, you don’t need people to tell you what you are doing is right. “ But there is no scope in the market for what you are studying” *rolls eyes* DO YOUR RESEARCH before you choose a career path and go ahead with it. YOU DON’T NEED RANDOM EXPERTS giving you advises.

8) Smile Everyday

We all go through these immense mood swings where you just want to be left alone at times. Even when the other person says the smallest thing you become aggressive, emotional or upset. Try to control your emotions by smiling and BEING THANKFUL(always helps me).

9) Workout and Meditate

The amount of peace it gives you is wow!

10)Become a part of a project

Give charity or become a part of an NGO or anything else that helps your community. Trust me this does wonders to your will power and confidence.

11)Reward yourself for your accomplishments

SHOPPING!

12) Give yourself to take baby steps

BE PATIENT! All the great things take time. Let it take its course of time.

13) Travel

If you have the means to if not atleast go for road trips or go to the beach or anywhere that gives you peace.

14) If required find yourself a mentor (It could also be someone who motivates you)

15) Search for ways to improve

Learn from others (BUT YOU DON’T NEED TO COPY THEM), search online or look at how you used to feel about your goals a few years back to how you see them today. YOU WILL LEARN FROM YOUR OWNSELF.

16) DON’T LOSE HOPE! STICK IN THERE, YOU ARE ALMOST THERE

17) Interact with people (Learned and Experienced Individuals)

18) Never Stop learning (Ask questions, research and experiment)

19) Indulge into positive and self-building activities (COULD BE READING A BOOK OR COOKING or whatever you like)

20) Spend quality time with your family

Makes you feel that they will always be with you no matter what (SO MOTIVATING)

21) Stick to your hobbies (HOBBIES ARE IMPORTANT)

22) Keep yourself Motivated to move forward (Do every task with passion and Focus)

23) Always be thankful towards people who have taught you any lesson about life

24) Set your priorities (Referring back to point 3)

You need to keep asking yourself questions everyday regarding your goals in life.

And before you think you aren’t doing well or you already want to give up talk to your close ones, you will realise that there are people who are fighting bigger battles than you but, their will power is so strong that they don’t give up.

NEVER GIVING UP is the Key.

“WE RISE BY LIFTING OTHERS” (Robert Ingersoll)

I am starting this blog with a question.

Ask yourself What makes you more thankful and giving?

My answer is Volunteering to help the less fortunate.

This topic definitely fits into the Personal Growth category (which is my personal favorite to talk about).

Growing up and studying in the UAE has been an amazing journey. From interacting with people of different cultures to enjoying every festival of various religions in the UAE. This country has really taught us what it is to live in a diverse community. But, one of the aspects of this diverse community has been how giving each citizen has been towards the less fortunate. Not only in the month of Ramadan but, throughout the year.

We all know about the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. A leader who is an inspiration for people like me who grew up in Dubai. 2018 is named the Year of Zayed as this year marks 100 years since the birth of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE, who passed away in 2004.

Since the beginning of this year various initiatives were taken by the People of Dubai to spread smiles on the faces of the less fortunate, encourage the youth to help build the society, encourage leadership, empathy, sports activities and much more. Some of the initiatives were The Zayed Happiness Van, The Zayed Sports tournament, Zayed Painting Contest.

Apart from this, charities such as Al Noor, The Red Crescent and Dubai Cares have also been the helping hands in shaping the society. The main reason behind why my friends and I volunteered quite a few times with Al Noor or got chances to visit the special needs children was the reaction of those kids. Nothing has ever made me happier than seeing those kids love you selflessly. Their response towards genuine love and affection is amazing. Seriously!

I personally feel that one gets short of words when you come to explain emotions related to people who probably cant express themselves normally but, are way more special than any other person you meet or come across.

The joy I have felt in spending time with those kids who don’t know me personally but, they value me just for giving them time.

Volunteering or giving back to the society can be done in several ways.

1) Blood Donation www.blooddonors.ae

2) Clothes Donation www.rcuae.ae

3) Give a stray a home www.abudhabianimalshelter.com

4) Give Books www.maraya.ae

5) Give Food/Water www.thesamenessproject.com

6) Give Financial Support

7) Become a part of a society to help towards a specific cause

8) Be a part of the Awareness groups (i.e Breast Cancer, Diabetes groups)

All these could also be done at labor camps or could be sent abroad to other countries where help is required.

How did Volunteering Change me?

Being More Thankful (Gratitude)

I realized that the more I volunteer to put in efforts for others I keep becoming more thankful. The old paradox thinking of receiving something in return of giving something completely changed. I started feeling happier when I would see smiles on other people’s face because of me. This is a very intangible emotion. Which grows you as a person who is positive and selfless. From my personal experience I would suggest each one of you to become a part of any foundation or cause that helps you in experiencing peace.

If you cant be a part of any of this cause then fulfill the basic necessities of people by donating.

Community is Important

I feel that now I really have a purpose other than focusing on my career or family or any other personal goals. By purpose I mean that if you are able to bring even a small positive change in someone’s life then you become a responsible citizen of this society. We need to be taught in schools how important it is to give back to the society you are born in or grew up in.

Develop New Skills

By being able to understand the issues other people go through you really learn to be patient and helpful. I mean just by listening to someone with a disability to make them realize that they are an equally important part of this society. You expand your horizons by meeting new people and learning from each other.

Working Hard doesn’t always mean you make money

I realized that although I don’t get paid for all the efforts I do be it travelling in the metro or volunteering at odd times it makes me sleep peacefully at night. Isn’t it true that all great things take time whether its building relationships, growing up, becoming independent, finding your passion. No shortcuts can be taken whatsoever. Life is much more than just earning money we cant measure everything based on monetary gain.

Peace

“Giving is gaining” I truly believe this. Whenever I felt I didn’t have anything to do be it in my winter breaks of any other time of the year I gave all my time to those who only required genuine care and time. The peace I received in spending time with those who don’t have families like us yet they are still loved by many was amazing. It made me focus less on my less and more on the surroundings (which is very important) and this has been scientifically proven as well the more good you do for someone else the more goodness you receive.

This blog made me shed light on how I grew as an individual and did my bit to help my society. I still have a long way to go by doing more for the less fortunate and I pledge all of you to do the same.
